From the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS):
Here we are, taking the river ray out for a walk. Actually, our technician, Scott Southern, is taking the river ray over to where the Meramec River is overflowing the bridge to take a discharge measurement on December 30, 2015.
Sometimes, when we find a place we need to take a discharge measurement, it’s difficult to get there via normal transportation. Here, we had to walk a half-mile in knee-deep water moving around 3-6 feet per second. That’s why it’s so important to wear safety equipment. Even though we’re on the roadway here, that much water can be unpredictable.
That’s why it’s also really important to heed the Weather Service’s warning: Turn Around, Don’t Drown!
