Some of the Trash that Floodwaters Leave Behind

From the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS):

This probably isn’t news to anyone, but it does bear repeating—floodwaters pack some serious force behind them. Also, it’s not just the water itself, but the various things it picks up and brings with it as it floods.

Here, you can see the effects of the Gasconde River’s flooding on a campground at Rich Fountain, Missouri. The floodwaters ate out the banks and scoured the surface, damaging concrete, steel, and asphalt. The water has since receded, but it will take some time to repair the damage and for the ecosystem to rebound.
