Aristedes Mahairas Named Special Agent in Charge of Special Operations/Cyber Division of the New York Field Office

FBI Director James B. Comey has named Aristedes Mahairas as the special agent in charge of the Special Operations/Cyber Division of the New York Field Office. Mr. Mahairas most recently served as the special assistant to the Executive Assistant Director of the National Security Branch (NSB) and section chief of the NSB Executive Staff Section.
Mr. Mahairas entered on duty with the FBI in 1996 and was assigned to the New York Field Office, where he worked as an undercover employee in several successful undercover operations.
In 2003, Mr. Mahairas served in the FBI’s International Operations Division and as the legal attaché to Athens on several deployments, during which time he provided assistance to projects including the criminal trial of the 17 November Terrorist Group. In 2004, Mr. Mahairas served with the FBI’s Critical Incident Response Group, the legal attaché in Athens, and the government of Greece on the design and implementation of the FBI’s security plan for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
In 2005, Mr. Mahairas served as the FBI’s country program manager in Sofia, Bulgaria for the Southeast European Cooperative Initiative, where he focused on issues of weapons smuggling and human trafficking.
In 2006, Mr. Mahairas was promoted to supervisory special agent and was assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Athens, Greece.
In 2009, Mr. Mahairas returned to the New York Field Office as a supervisor on the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF), where he led the investigative team responsible for Canada and Africa.
In 2013, Mr. Mahairas was promoted to assistant special agent in charge, managing a branch of the FBI’s New York JTTF. In this capacity, Mr. Mahairas led five separate teams, which included 130 investigators and analysts, and focused on terrorism-related cases affecting New York City and the adjoining counties. Following this assignment, Mr. Mahairas was promoted to section chief of the Strategic Operations Section in the Counterterrorism Division.
Mr. Mahairas received a Bachelor’s of Arts degree in political science from Baruch College (magna cum laude) and his Juris Doctor from New York Law School (cum laude).
Mr. Mahairas reports to New York in late September.
