Cistern Spring

From USGS Volcanoes:

Why's that pool empty? After every major eruption of Steamboat Geyser, nearby Cistern Spring (pictured) starts to drain, losing its water to the geothermal reservoir beneath the Norris Geyser Basin. Evidently, so much water is lost through the eruption that groundwater pressures wane, and so does Cistern's water level. After a few days to weeks, the water returns to create one of Yellowstone's most beautiful pools of thermal water. This photo was taken a few days after Steamboat's most recent eruption on September 3, 2014. Photo by J. Lowenstern.http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/observatories/yvo
