The guy who invented email as we know it is dead. Raymond Samuel Tomlinson was 74 years old. No details of the circumstances of his death were given.
Tomlinson was the first one to send an electronic message between computers. This happened in 1971. At the time, computers were still very large. A form of email existed, but it all stayed on one machine. Tomlinson figured out how to send a message to another machine.
Tomlinson worked for the defense contractor Raytheon.
