SO. PACIFIC OCEAN *Full Update* Tropical Cyclone Ula Slowly Moving Away from Fiji

Warnings remain in effect for Fiji and various islands as Tropical Cyclone Ula continues tracking south and away from Fiji. This image from the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite was taken on January 2, 2016 (Jan. 3 local time Fiji) and shows the eye of Tropical Cyclone Ula between several islands. The compact system remained well-defined. (the black area on the image represents no data as it it between satellite passes).

A strong wind warning remains in force for the rest of Lau group, Yasawa and Mamanuca group, northern and southern Viti Levu, Lomaiviti Group, Kadavu, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and the nearby smaller islands.

At 10:22 a.m. EST on Sunday, January 3, 2016 (4:22 a.m. local time Fiji, Monday, January 4, 2016) severe Tropical Cyclone Ula was located near 21.4 south 179.9 east or about 100km (62.1 miles) west-southwest of Ono-i-lau or about 300 km (186.4 miles) south-southwest of Kabara. The cyclone was moving southwest at about 15 kph (9.3 mph). Close to its center, maximum sustained winds were estimated near 150 kph (93.2 mph).

On this track, the cyclone is expected to lie about 270 km (167.8 miles) southwest of ono-i-lau or about 410 km (254.8 miles) south-southwest of Kabara.
