Ice Coverage on Lake Erie

What a difference a year makes! These true color images from NOAAView show the difference in Lake Erie's ice coverage on January 14, 2015, (top) and January 5, 2016.

According to the Buffalo News, Lake Erie's temperature was 40 degrees on January 5, 2016, the warmest the lake has been since 2007. The newspaper also reported that the lake was 99 percent ice-free -- the most for January 5 since 2012, when the lake didn't freeze.
