Flooding on the Lower Mississippi

From NASA Earth:

Flooding on the Lower Mississippi

In early January 2016, communities along the Mississippi River faced severe flooding after heavy rains drenched parts of Missouri and Illinois. Flooding was not limited, however, to the river’s upper reaches. On January 11, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers opened the Bonnet CarrĂ© Spillway near New Orleans in preparation for the southward-moving pulse of flood water.

This image from January 11, 2016, captured with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite, shows the segment of the swollen river that runs through southern Mississippi and Louisiana.
