Importance of Snowmelt

The melting snow from the vast Yellowstone plateau provides significant runoff for many rivers that ultimately reach across the western United States. The Gibbon River (pictured here) joins the Firehole River to form the Madison River. The Madison is one of the three forks of the Missouri River.
