City lights are one of the most visible human impacts seen on Earth from space -- like this data image comparing changes in nighttime lights around Chicago. An instrument on the Suomi NPP satellite has been collecting data on the brightness of lights around the Earth since 2011, adding to an ever-growing archive of data that allows researchers to track changes on a global scale.
