Wildfires in Africa

Hundreds of fires are covering large portions of Central Africa is this image taken on Aug. 14 by theNPP - Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnershipsatellite. Actively burning areas, detected by the VIIRS instrument, are outlined in red.

Many of these fires may be intentional agricultural fires set to rid the area of leftover crops to ready the land for the next season. The agricultural burning season usually runs from May through August in this part of the world. https://go.nasa.gov/2w4HPBH
