Be Careful at Mountain Passes & Trails!

From Mount Rainier National Park:

As you may have heard by now, mountain passes and trails are opening earlier than they ever have before. The arrival of Spring today is almost like the arrival of summer in a more typical year! Reports are coming in of people climbing peaks in March that they'd normally have to wait till July for. Tempting as this is, PROCEED WITH CAUTION. Many high places, while technically accessible, are still icy and vulnerable to rockfall from slopes loosened up by freezing and thawing. Don't confuse warm weather with lack of danger, when the opposite is true. Take an ice ax and know how to use it, and find out everything you can about trail conditions in advance. Enjoy your public lands -- but have a SAFE and happy Spring! ~klb
