NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC OCEAN - System 98W Battered by Strong Wind Shear
System 98W is being battered by wind shear in the South China Sea and is elongating. It was centered near 6.3 north latitude and 107.3 east longitude, about 270 nautical miles south of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. This visible image on Dec. 22 at 6:05 UTC (1:05 a.m. EST) at from the MODIS instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite shows the low pressure area near the Vietnam coast.
Strong vertical wind shear between 20 and 30 knots has elongated the system and has weakened it. Convection and thunderstorm development have been diminishing.
