NORTHWESTERN PACIFIC OCEAN _RapidScat Sees System 98W Near Vietnam
System 98W formed in the South China Sea on Dec. 20 and NASA's RapidScat instrument that flies aboard the International Space Station analyzed the low pressure area's sustained winds. On Dec. 20, RapidScat saw the strongest sustained winds near 27 meters per second (60.4 mph/97.2 kph) north and west of the center. Winds around the rest of the system were much weaker.
Today, Dec. 21 at 0600 UTC (1 a.m. EST) System 98W was centered near 6.4 north latitude and 108.9 east longitude, about 305 miles southeast of Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. It has a medium chance to become a tropical depression in the next 24 hours.
