From Midwest National Parks:
Mmm…Bacon. Did you know one of Jewel Cave National Monument's more famous formations, Cave Bacon, is a type of flowstone? The effect is created by the deposition of water-borne minerals traveling over and over on the same route. Variations in rainfall, mineral balance and other factors change the speed and mineral content of the water, which is what causes the delicious-looking bacon effect. This piece is over 10 feet long and can be seen on the Scenic Tour.
