Solar Eclipse over Dunes and Prairie Sunflowers

From Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve:

The dark centers and golden rays of prairie sunflowers seem to echo the eclipse shining above them. Sunflowers blossom in the dunes and grasslands of the park around the third week of August each year - perfect timing for the 2017 solar eclipse.

To capture a partial solar eclipse in a landscape, photographers must develop an image with two different exposures - one of the eclipsed sun using a solar filter to protect the camera's sensor and photographer's eyes, and one unfiltered of the landscape below the sun. In this photo, the eclipse was captured at 11:46 am during its 85% peak in Southern Colorado. An unusual, otherworldly light bathes the landscape during an eclipse - truly an unforgettable experience!
