July 4, 1803 is often believed to be the day when the purchase of the Louisiana Territory was announced. However, the proclamation actually happened on June 30, 1803 by the Boston Independent Chronicle – “LOUISIANA CEDED TO THE UNITED STATES!” shouted the headline. The news spread throughout the rest of the country as fast as ships and post riders could carry it.
