Education is Vital

From George Washington Carver National Monument:

"Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom to our people."
- George Washington Carver, 1896

Happy #NationalFreedomDay! On this day in history in 1865, Abraham Lincoln signed a joint House and Senate resolution that later became the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. President Lincoln signed this amendment outlawing slavery on February 1, 1865, although it was not ratified by the states until later.

George Washington Carver was born enslaved on the Carver Farm during the Civil War. Although George encountered many challenges throughout his entire life, especially in his journey for an education, George was grateful for the opportunity to attend schools unlike many former slaves before him. What do you think freedom meant to George? What does freedom mean to you? (ed)
