Artificial Light at Night

From NOAA Satellite and Information Service:

With the help of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) data on on the intensity of artificial light at night, researchers at the University of Central Florida have found that sea turtle-friendly lighting ordinances along Florida's coast seems to be working.

Scientists reached this conclusion after comparing DMSP satellite data on nighttime lights from 1992 to 2012 with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission data on sea turtle-nesting for the same period.

When their analysis was complete, the researchers found that the density of turtle nests is reduced in light areas and higher where it's dark.

Analyses of DMSP nighttime light data, which spans 21 years and six satellites, have revealed several distinct patterns linked to population changes, economic development and the improvements in lighting efficiency. NOAA operates the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program on behalf of the U.S. Air Force.
