Artificial Light at Night

From NOAA Satellite and Information Service:

With the help of Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) data on on the intensity of artificial light at night, researchers at the University of Central Florida have found that sea turtle-friendly lighting ordinances along Florida's coast seems to be working.

Scientists reached this conclusion after comparing DMSP satellite data on nighttime lights from 1992 to 2012 with Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission data on sea turtle-nesting for the same period.

When their analysis was complete, the researchers found that the density of turtle nests is reduced in light areas and higher where it's dark.

Analyses of DMSP nighttime light data, which spans 21 years and six satellites, have revealed several distinct patterns linked to population changes, economic development and the improvements in lighting efficiency. NOAA operates the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program on behalf of the U.S. Air Force.

50 Years of Super Bowl and Food Safety Changes

From the #USDA:

Super Bowl party food
Celebrate Super Bowl 50 by looking at how food safety has changed over the past 50 years.
The Super Bowl is a very popular food “holiday” in the United States, and this year’s game marks a milestone. Super Bowl 50, dubbed the “Golden Super Bowl,” will be played on February 7, 2016.
Help set the gold standard and ensure that you and your guests remain free of foodborne illness by following four steps to food safety.
Super Bowl 1 – Super Bowl 50: How Food Safety Has Changed
Much has changed since the first Super Bowl was played in 1967. Both tickets and commercials have gotten significantly more expensive, with ticket costs increasing from $12 to over $10K and the price of commercials rising from $42K to $5 million. Instead of university bands, the half time show now features entertainers performing in elaborate costumes on impressive stages.
Just as the game has changed, our understanding of foodborne illness has also evolved. Since the first game, USDA research has found that color and texture are unreliable indicators of safety and doneness. Using a food thermometer is the only way to ensure that meat, poultry, and egg products have been cooked to a safe minimum internal temperature.
It is now known that kitchen towels can also be a major source of cross-contamination. To eliminate bacteria, kitchen towels should be washed frequently in the hot cycle of the washing machine. Paper towels should never be reused, since they are designed for single use. Multiple kitchen towels should be kept handy for use when the current one becomes dirty.
Clean, Separate, Cook & Chill
In spite of these changes, the four basic messages of food safety (clean, separate, cook, chill) have remained the same: CLEAN – SEPARATE – COOK – CHILL.
Before and after preparing, handling, or eating food, always wash your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds. Use clean plates, dishes, and utensils to serve food, and keep surfaces clean.
Make sure raw meat and poultry do not come into contact with other food. Use separate plates and utensils for these items, and never place cooked food back on the same plate that previously held raw food.
Always use a food thermometer when cooking meat and poultry products. The thermometer should be placed in the thickest part of the food and read after the manufacturer designated time.
  • Cook raw beef, pork, lamb and veal steaks, chops, and roasts to 145 °F. For safety and quality, allow meat to rest for at least three minutes before carving or consuming.
  • Cook raw ground beef, pork, lamb, and veal to 160 °F.
  • Cook raw poultry to 165 °F.
Keep hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Hot foods must have a heat source, and cold foods should be kept on ice to remain at a safe temperature and out of the Danger Zone. The Danger Zone is the temperature range between 40 °F and 140 °F where bacteria multiply rapidly.
Leftover foods should be refrigerated promptly and not be kept at room temperature for more than two hours. Perishable foods left out longer than two hours should be discarded.

A Community for Agricultores in Puerto Rico

Dianilda Rodriguez of GR Management Corp., Arlene Zambrana from USDA Rural Development, and Maria Rodriquez-Collazo of PathStone stand in front of the completed Alturas de Castañer housing complex in Puerto Rico.
In the municipality of Lares, Puerto Rico, lies Alturas de Castañer, a small, mountainous community that is home to 24 agricultores and their families. The agricultores – or farm workers – work hard year-round to produce coffee, bananas, root vegetables and citrus fruits that are then sold in local markets and to area restaurants.
Before coming to the community of Alturas de Castañer, many families lived in cramped conditions, sometimes with two or three other families.  Conditions were unsanitary and children were constantly sick.  Some homes did not even have roofs, and residents suffered dangerous exposure to the natural elements, including torrential rains during hurricane season.
Alturas de Castañer resident Maria Rodriguez and her husband recall renting a house that they could barely afford. The home was in disrepair, they had to use a ladder as a makeshift set of front steps to their home, and finding snakes and rats in their living space was commonplace.
With the help of USDA Rural Development’s Farm Labor Housing Program, the Municipality of Lares was able to build an affordable 24-home rental community, Alturas de Castañer, dedicated solely to farm workers and their families.
After moving into this community, living conditions improved dramatically for many residents. Residents like Jomar, an agricultor who uses a wheelchair for mobility; the closets and kitchen in his Alturas de Castañer home were built for wheelchair accessibility.
The community is quiet and clean, the children of the farm workers have a safe place to play, and the homes are well maintained by an experienced management company. It’s affordable, too; farm workers living in this community are only required to pay 30 percent of their income towards rent.
Built in 2008, Alturas de Castañer was a product of a partnership between USDA Rural Development, Rural Opportunities Puerto Rico, Inc. (ROPRI), an affiliate of PathStone, the Puerto Rico Department of Housing, and the Federal Home Loan Bank.
USDA and ROPRI have realized the success of the investment despite the significant challenges in planning and building a community in rural Puerto Rico. USDA and its partners are now looking forward to the development of self-sustaining community gardens which will also support a summer food program for children.
An investment like Alturas de Castañer, the only one of its kind in Puerto Rico, helps us realize that a better future is possible for rural Puerto Ricans.  USDA Rural Development is working with community developers and affordable housing advocates to create more communities dedicated to the essential agricultores of Puerto Rico.

Looking Ahead: Adding Seats to the Table to Diversify the Agricultural Workforce

From the #USDA:

USDA Deputy Secretary Krysta Harden with ADM Chief Human Resources Officer Mike D’Ambrose and students Nicole Ashley Holden and Dara Robertson at the Agriculture Diversity and Inclusion Roundtable in Washington, D.C.
From the field to the fork, we need diversity in agriculture.  I’m proud to say that here at USDA, we are doing our part to make sure young people have access to the wide array of opportunities available. Over the next five years, we can expect to see an average of 57,900 jobs become available annually in food, agriculture, renewable natural resources and the environment. However, only 35,400 students will graduate with the specialized degrees and expertise to fill those jobs, leaving 39 percent to be filled by young people with talent in other areas. We need to expand the talent pool and change the dialogue to show agriculture as an attractive, meaningful career path.
Recently, I had the pleasure of participating in a roundtable discussion with leaders from industry, higher education, and the nonprofit sector to share best practices on how we can come together to grow a diverse pipeline of talent for U.S. agriculture. Together, we were able to discuss what’s working, and where we can improve to create opportunities for young people of all backgrounds to ultimately strengthen the ag workforce.
Diversity comes in many forms. For one, there’s diversity of experience. Whether you come from a farming background or not, there are opportunities to get involved in agriculture. Diverse perspectives help expand the reach and efficiency of products and technology developed by industry, and provide critical insight allowing us to improve the quality of services we provide here in the federal government. For businesses, hiring and promoting employees from diverse backgrounds will result in increased profitability, and by broadening the scope of the agricultural workforce, we’re helping to create economic opportunities and foster prosperous careers that can last a lifetime.
Gender diversity is important too. Through our Women in Ag network here at USDA, we’re changing the face of agriculture by empowering women with the tools they need to succeed. Many of our agribusiness partners are taking similar approaches to change the make-up of their executive teams and boards, as well as their employee bases. It’s not always easy being a female leader in a male-dominated industry, but through mentorship and conversations on shared experiences we can take steps to make sure women are recognized as equal partners on farms, in businesses, and in the board room.
I’m optimistic about what’s to come, and I know that by working together and holding each other accountable, we will create a more inclusive agricultural workforce for the future.

Documenting the Storm

From NOAA Satellite and Information Service:

Last weekend (January 22-24),a massive winter storm moved across the eastern United States, dumping near-record amounts of snow from West Virginia through southern New York and causing major coastal flooding from Virginia to New England. Yet while those of us on the East Coast were busy dealing with the effects of the storm, the instruments aboard NOAA/NASA's Suomi NPP were busy documenting them from its orbit 540 miles above the Earth.

The following web page from the Center for Satellite Applications and Research (STAR) offers a variety of animations and images detailing the storm in its entirety. From lunar reflectance and true-color imagery to animations on snowfall rate and temperature, the information presented here shows how data from satellites like Suomi NPP can play a crucial role in not only tracking severe weather, but in documenting its aftermath to improve future forecasts as well.

Fumaroles

From the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS):

In this recent photo taken at Puʻu ʻŌʻō Crater in Hawaii, we can see that elemental sulfur vapor escaping from the fumarole has cooled to form yellow-colored crystals around the margins of the crack.

Fumaroles are vents from which volcanic gas escapes into the atmosphere. Fumaroles may occur along tiny cracks or long fissures, in chaotic clusters or fields, and on the surfaces of lava flows and thick deposits of pyroclastic flows. They may persist for decades or centuries if they are above a persistent heat source or disappear within weeks to months if they occur atop a fresh volcanic deposit that quickly cools.

The Intern

We downloaded The Intern last night.

Anne Hathaway plays a young millennial entrepreneur. Robert de Niro plays an elderly widower who tried retirement and didn't like it. He needs something to do so he gets a job at Anne Hathaway's company as an intern. He is assigned to Anne Hathaway, who doesn't want to have anything to do with him at first. But his good character and old-fashioned values eventually win her over.

All in all, this movie was good, clean fun. There were a few obscene gestures and maybe a bad word or two, but, by today's standards, this was a very clean movie. And it was entertaining.

I wish there were more movies like this one.
