NOAA Environmental Visualization Laboratory Image of the Day: Calbuco Volcano Erupts in Southern Chile
On April 23, 2015, the Calbuco Volcano in southern Chile erupted for the first time since 1972. The last major eruption occurred in 1961 and sent ash columns 12-15 kilometers high. This image was taken by the Suomi NPP satellite's VIIRS instrument in a high resolution infrared channel around 1:15 a.m. ET on April 23, 2015. (http://go.usa.gov/3Zp7B)
