The full moon two weekends ago lit up Yosemite Falls, as well as the snow and ice accumulated on the shelves and cracks to the east of the plume of water and light. When the moon is bright over Yosemite, you often don't even need to turn on your headlamp to walk the trails: moonlight reflects off of the granite cliffs and illuminates the valley for those awake and outside to see it.

Head outside to a park or an open space near you tonight, to catch the peak of the 2017 Geminid meteor shower (peaking tonight and tomorrow night.) Up to 120 meteors per hour can be viewed at the height of the shower!

How fitting that on the eve of the autumnal equinox, Yosemite National Park received its first snow of the season! The tops of the valley walls got a little dusting while several inches of snow fell in Tuolumne Meadows.

UPDATE: The Tioga road has re-opened. The Glacier Point Road is still closed due to snow. Please call 209-372-0200 (press 1 then 1) for current road conditions in the park.

South Fork Fire

From Yosemite National Park:

A new fire, the South Fork Fire, has started in Wawona, south of Wawona Dome. The Chilnualna Falls trail is closed at the bottom and smoke is visible from the Swinging Bridge area. The fire size is currently estimated to be 20 acres and the cause is unknown. Air resources are on scene and suppression operations are in progress.

Have you ever sniffed a tree? 

It sounds like a weird question to ask, but if you've never done it you are missing out on something pretty interesting. Both the ponderosa pine and its higher elevation cousin, the jeffrey pine, have a unique scent that is often described as butterscotch or vanilla. By sticking your nose close to their puzzle piece bark you can get a whiff of this scent yourself. Keep an eye out for a tree with thick red bark and needles 2-3 inches long, stick your nose close and give smelling trees a try. What nature smells do you associate with Yosemite?
