Flag of the United States of America | Fort Scott National Historic Site, National Park Service

Today is Flag Day! This holiday celebrates the adoption of the flag of the Unites States, which happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Fort Scott NHS presently flies a 30-star flag at the Post flag pole representing the year 1848, the year most of the construction of the fort finished.

Bleeding Kansas

All of these weapons were used by Kansans during Bleeding Kansas. From left to right we have: a double-barrel shotgun and the 1853 Slanting breech sharps Carbine. The pistol at the top right is a M1836 .54 Cal conversion single-shot horse pistol. The bowie knife at the bottom right was a versatile weapon used for hunting and combat.
