Elephant Butte Dam in New Mexico

It's a new week, and today we're sharing a cool night photo taken at Elephant Butte Dam in New Mexico by Benjamin Kalminson.

Elephant Butte Dam and Reservoir (originally called Engle Dam) is on the Rio Grande, 125 miles north of El Paso, Texas, can store 2,210,298 acre-feet of water to provide irrigation and year-round power generation.

Fresno Dam near Havre, Montana

#DYK Fresno Dam required 2,105,000.00 cu yd of material during its construction between 1937-39? The dam sits along the Milk River near Havre, Montana. 

An overflow-type spillway at the north end of the dam provides for a flow of 51,360 cubic feet per second through the concrete-lined channel. The outlet works discharge a maximum of 2,180 cubic feet per-second through two 72-inch steel pipe outlet tubes.

A conservation storage of 127,200 acre-feet is impounded in Fresno Reservoir. Provision also is made for flood control benefits.

Construction of the Third Power Plant began in 1967 after Interior Secretary Udall announced the new powerhouse would use 600,000 kW generators instead of 300,000 kW generators, as originally planned.

Carlsbad Project in NM | Bureau of Reclamation

We're taking a step back in time for Throwback Thursday to learn about the Carlsbad Project in NM. Today's photo shows a group of workers after cleaning one of the Project's lateral canals. 

The Carlsbad Project was one of the earliest Reclamation projects and is significant as a surviving example of mixed 19th and 20th century technology. Many features of this project are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Carlsbad Project is in southeastern New Mexico near Ft. Sumner and Carlsbad.

The Carlsbad Project stores water in Santa Rosa (a Corps of Engineers Dam), Sumner, Brantley, and Avalon Dams to provide water for about 25,000 acres within the Carlsbad Irrigation District.

Project features include Sumner Dam and Lake Sumner (formerly Alamogordo Dam and Reservoir), McMillan Dam (breached in 1991 and replaced with Brantley Dam, Avalon Dam, and a drainage and distribution system to irrigate 25,055 acres of land in the Carlsbad area.

Glendo Dam in Wyoming

The upcoming solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 will be within viewing distance of several Reclamation facilities. 

Solar Eclipse Saturday takes you to Glendo Dam in Wyoming, where the eclipse will be fully visible directly from the centerline of the viewing path. 

The managing partners at Glendo Reservoir and surrounding campsites report that all of their reservable sites are at-capacity. 

There are multiple first-come, first-served sites, and those are expected to fill quickly as we near the date of the event.
