Red Cone

From USGS Volcanoes:

Ready for another #volcanopopquiz? This red cone is one of a pair of basaltic cinder cones called––you guessed it––Red Cones, which were erupted about 8,000 years ago. In three words or less, why are the rocks red?

Red Cones is located near the town of Mammoth Lakes, California, which lies on the western edge of the Long Valley Caldera. You can read more about cinder cones in the Long Valley Volcanic Region here:http://on.doi.gov/1aKQjz6

This USGS photo was taken by M. Nathenson in the summer of 2010. Sierra Nevada is in the background.
