Parsons, Kan., Awarded Membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry

Omaha, Neb., May 28, 2013 – Parsons, Kan., has been awarded membership in Union Pacific's Train Town USA Registry as part of Union Pacific's ongoing efforts to highlight cities with a historical connection to the railroad. The city received an official Train Town USA resolution signed by Union Pacific Chairman Jim Young, in a special presentation during the community's Katy Days Festival. Union Pacific launched its Train Town USA Registry as part of the railroad's 150th anniversary celebration in 2012.
"We are proud to recognize Parsons as we celebrate our growing up together," said Ben Jones, Union Pacific director - Public Affairs for Kansas and Missouri. "Union Pacific was founded to help connect the nation from east to west. Our shared heritage with Parsons is a source of pride as we remember our past while delivering the goods American businesses and families use every day."
The location for Parsons was picked specifically to serve as a railroad town after discussions with another city further down the rail line fell through.
The main line through Parsons was constructed in 1886 through 1887 by the Kansas City & Pacific Railroad Company. The city is named after Judge Levi Parsons, who at the time of the city's founding in 1870, sat as president of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (MK&T), better known as "The Katy."
Parsons was the location of the general headquarters, major shop complex and large switching yard for Katy Industries and the rail line. The Katy and Union Pacific merged in 1988.
