The Bonnet Carre Control Structure

From the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS):

This is the Bonnet Carre Control Structure, operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. It regulates the release of the Mississippi River water into the Bonnet Carre Spillway. It’s primary purpose is to relieve pressure on the levees that protect New Orleans when the Mississippi River enters flood stage. Learn more about how the Army Corps manages their Spillways here: http://1.usa.gov/1mWF6BS

When the Army Corps opens the Spillway, USGS usually assists by measuring the amount of water moving through the Spillway, how fast it’s moving, and how much sediment it’s bringing with it. This information helps the Army Corps decide how many bays to open and how much additional water to release.
