Special Feature: RapidScat Sees Strong Winds off Eastern Canada and New England Coasts

On Jan. 13, NASA's RapidScat instrument measured the sustained winds from the coast of northeastern Canada and New England. RapidScat is an instrument aboard the International Space Station.

RapidScat saw the strongest winds were near 30 meters per second (67 mph/108 kph) [dark red]. Strongest winds were mostly over the ocean, but also seen near Cape Breton Island and along the coast of Nova Scotia, Canada.

NOAA's National Weather Service in Taunton, Mass. noted that in Boston on Jan. 13, sustained westerly winds were near 19 mph, with the highest sustained wind speed near 36 mph. Winds also gusted as high as 47 mph in Boston. Along the coast of Massachusetts, RapidScat saw a large area of sustained winds near 18 meters per second (40 mph/64 kph). Credit: NASA JPL, Doug Tyler
