Safety on Ice

From the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Headquarters:

Ice thickness varies from one location to the next in the same body of water. Never attempt to judge the strength of ice by its appearance. Wind, temperature, humidity and size and depth of the water all affect ice formation. If you do venture onto the ice, don’t go alone and be sure to wear a personal flotation device. Remember, ice conditions are extremely variable; the only way to be completely safe is to stay off the ice. Thanks to our Shenango River Lake, Pittsburgh District for sharing!
