Thirty-five years ago today on February 9, 1980, the Department of Defense launched NavStar 5, or GPS 1-5, at 3:08 pm EST. The Global Positioning System (GPS) was originally developed to provide all-weather around-the-clock navigation capabilities for military ground, sea, and air forces. The technology is so ubiquitous that it has become a part of daily life for people around the world.
