Mauna Loa

From USGS Volcanoes:

This #tbt to 1984 serves to remind us all that there's not just one active volcano on the Island of Hawaii. In 1984, the world's most massive volcano, Mauna Loa erupted suddenly after a 3-year period of slowly increasing earthquake activity. Lava flows from this eruption moved down the northeast flank of the volcano at speeds up to 215 miles per hour...so not all lava flows in Hawaii move slowly. For the past year, there has been a slight elevation in earthquake activity at Mauna Loa, and a recent television segment featuring Hawaiian Volcano Observatory scientist Frank Trusdell discusses the possibility that the volcano is reawakening. Watch it here:http://bit.ly/17s2Bu9

This photograph was taken on March 28, 1984 by Bob Decker. By March 29, this channel fed an 'a'a flow that reached 15 miles from the vent; the channel width varied about 20 to 50 yards.
