Meet Michelle Stern, our #SelfieSunday for this week! Michelle is a Hydrologic Technician with the USGS California Water Science Center. Here she snaps a selfie before assisting Frank Gehrke, Chief of California's Department of Water Resources Cooperative Snow Surveys Program, with the second manual snow survey of the 2015 snow season in California. The Jan. 29 survey near Echo summit, approximately 90 miles east of Sacramento, found a snow water equivalent of 2.3 inches in the scant snowpack - just 12 percent of the long-term average for this time of year at that particular snow course. These measurements indicate that California’s drought will run through a fourth consecutive year.
Data collected from these surveys help scientists and water managers forecast water supply and plan for wise water use during times of drought.
