Return of the God Hypothesis, Dr. Stephen Meyer
When the debate is lost, insults become the loser's tool.

The founders of modern science saw evidence of God in nature. They believed that nature was created by a rational Creator. They had a biblical worldview. Holy Scripture tells us that man was created in the image of God. A rational God has created man with the ability to reason. Therefore, rational man can learn of rational God by studying God's creation. The pioneers of science believed in the God Hypothesis.
In the 19th century there was a shift in scientific thinking. Materialistic explanations were sought for natural phenomena. The worldview that assumes that reality is confined to this material realm of matter and energy is known as materialism. Materialism has become the default worldview of our culture. A great many people in positions of power (university professors, media personalities, politicians, bureaucrats, etc.) have also adopted materialism as their worldview. In the materialist worldview, we are the products of a blind, cold, indifferent universe that did not particularly have us in mind.
But some scientific discoveries within the last 100 years suggest that the God Hypothesis might be correct, after all. Or, at least, that there was planning and design that went into the universe that we experience around us:
The fact that the universe is expanding, and not static, suggests that the universe had a beginning. This idea was repugnant to physicists and astronomers 100 years ago, who thought that the universe was eternal.
The fact that various physical constants seem to be fine-tuned to support life also suggest design, rather than chance.
The specified complexity of the simplest living cell suggests design, rather than randomness.
Perhaps the God Hypothesis is the better explanation for the universe as we know it.
