Hello, mysteries of the universe! Insects as a biological class are one of the largest and most diverse, but also the least known. For every one species we've identified, there are likely at least 6 more species that have yet to be cataloged.This commonly-seen, metallic green fly could probably be identified by an insect expert, but the thrill of discovery is always with us as we look closely at the natural world around us!

Today is Flag Day! This holiday celebrates the adoption of the flag of the Unites States, which happened on June 14, 1777, by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. Fort Scott NHS presently flies a 30-star flag at the Post flag pole representing the year 1848, the year most of the construction of the fort finished.

It's 5:00 in Independence which means it's time to celebrate National Bourbon Day. Or maybe you celebrated this morning, Harry reportedly had a sip of bourbon in the morning before breakfast. That’ll wake you up! The Truman’s cocktail of choice was an Old Fashioned. Upon moving into the White House, Bess was less than satisfied with the drinks being prepared. She tried several times to hint to the butler that his Old Fashioned were not really Old Fashioned. Finally in desperation, the butler simply sloshed huge amounts of bourbon over ice — no sugar, no bitters, and definitely no garnish — and served them what amounted to bourbon on the rocks. Mrs. Truman was delighted, reportedly saying, “Now that’s an Old-Fashioned."

Construction of the Third Power Plant began in 1967 after Interior Secretary Udall announced the new powerhouse would use 600,000 kW generators instead of 300,000 kW generators, as originally planned.

Open tomorrow for the first time in three years, the Mariposa Grove has undergone a landmark restoration project to improve natural hydrology, construct an accessible boardwalk and more. The grove includes 500 mature giant sequoias, making it the largest of three sequoia groves within Yosemite.
