Jefferson City, MO | Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail

Jefferson City was established in 1821 specifically to be the state capital of Missouri. Five years later, the state moved its legislature there from St. Charles. The city, laid out by Daniel Boone’s son and named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, is located on the limestone bluffs above the Missouri River. The Louisiana Purchase, the great westward expansion, and the legacy of the Corps of Discovery all played a role in the decision to name the city for the president.

This bronze sculpture, created by Sabra Tull Meyer and dedicated in December 2008, stands in the Capitol Complex, featuring Lewis, Clark, York, George Drouillard and Seaman.
